The Alters is a unique science fiction survival game developed by 11 Bit Studios – the creators of famous games such as This War of Mine and Frostpunk. Players take on the role of Jan Dolski, a space miner and the sole survivor after a ship crash on a hostile planet. The game is scheduled to be released on June 13, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Game Pass.

The most prominent feature of the game is the concept of "Alters" – alternative versions of Jan created from a mysterious material called Rapidium. Each Alter represents a different life path that Jan could have chosen, with distinct skills, personalities, and memories based on important decisions in the past. For example, one Alter may become a brave engineer after protecting his mother from an abusive father, while another Alter is an insecure scientist due to being overly focused on his career.

Gameplay combines survival elements, base building, and exploration in a science fiction environment. Jan must control a mobile base shaped like a giant hamster wheel, continuously moving to avoid deadly radiation from the planet's sun. The base includes detachable and rearrangeable linked modules, creating a feeling like a futuristic dollhouse.

The real-time system creates continuous pressure for the player. One second in reality equals one minute in the game, and when the sun rises, the entire team will be eliminated. This forces the player to plan tactics and prioritize tasks smartly.

Exploring the surface of the planet brings many diverse challenges. Players must face unusual phenomena such as floating rocks, space-time distortions, severe sandstorms, acid rain, and lava flows. Some invisible anomalies can only be detected with special equipment, adding to the challenge of resource gathering.

The resource management and crafting system is very rich. Players can build new modules such as Laboratory, Social Room, produce Detectors to detect anomalies or Radiation Filters. However, resources are always limited, forcing players to make difficult decisions between satisfying the personal needs of the Alters or promoting the common mission.

Each Alter has its own emotions, needs, and fears, requiring the player to manage relationships and group psychology. This creates internal tension situations when different versions of the same person must cooperate, each carrying different emotional baggage and life perspectives.

The story explores profound philosophical questions about fate and choice: "Do we shape fate or does fate shape us?" The game uses a quantum computer at the base to simulate alternative outcomes of past decisions, allowing players to explore Jan's family tree through the "Tree of Life".

The Alters have about 20 unique Alters, each representing a specialized role and a distinct life path. The choice of which Alter to create depends on the current situation and the type of skills needed, from engineers, scientists to other experts.

The game's graphics are praised for the strong contrasting color palette between the gloomy environment and impressive visual effects. The soundtrack composed by Piotr Musial – who has worked on Frostpunk, This War of Mine, Diablo IV, and The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, promises to deliver a high-quality audio experience.

The game is described as a combination of the multiverse chaos of Everything Everywhere All At Once with survival and base-building mechanics. 11 Bit Studios has developed this project for nearly three years with high expectations from the gaming community, especially after the success of Frostpunk and This War of Mine.
