Sifu is a third-person martial arts action game developed by the French studio Sloclap. The game puts players in the role of a young martial artist on a journey to avenge those who killed his father – a master martial artist. With a mechanic of aging each time the player dies and a meticulously designed combat system, the game offers a challenging cinematic experience.

The highlight of Sifu lies in its unique resurrection mechanism. Each time the character dies, they are resurrected by an ancient charm, but in return, they must age a few years. This creates an interesting balance – the older they get, the stronger their attacks become, but their health decreases significantly. If the age exceeds the allowed limit, death will be permanent and the player must start over from the beginning.

The combat system in the game is inspired by the Pak Mei martial arts style, featuring over 150 attack moves that can be combined into diverse combos. Players need to flexibly dodge, defend, and counterattack accurately to deal with the intelligent AI of enemies. Surrounding environments such as tables, chairs, and bottles can be used as temporary weapons, creating spectacular cinematic action scenes.

The game features an impressive artistic style with unique hand-drawn graphics, different from the current trend of hyper-realistic graphics. The character and environment design are meticulously crafted, bringing a vivid and realistic combat space. The music composed by musician Howie Lee contributes to creating a tense and thrilling atmosphere throughout the experience.

The storyline of the game revolves around the main character's journey to seek justice after witnessing his father being murdered by a group of 5 traitorous disciples. Each level pits the player against a boss, from lively nightclubs to sophisticated art galleries or towering skyscrapers. Each location is designed with many hidden details and strategic shortcuts to explore.

The character development system allows unlocking new skills and upgrading combat abilities. Players can learn additional unique martial arts moves, enhance attack power or defensive capabilities through accumulating experience points. Especially, these skills will be retained even when the character dies and is resurrected.

The free extended version Arenas adds many exciting contents with 5 new game modes, 15 locations, and 120 challenges. Players can test themselves with survival challenges, competitive matches, or complete special missions to earn rewards. This mode offers many valuable hours of gameplay for fans who want to improve their martial arts skills.

Since its launch in February 2022 on PS4, PS5, and PC, Sifu was quickly ported to Nintendo Switch in November 2022 and Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S in March 2023. The game has sold over 3 million copies and received many positive reviews from the gaming community as well as critics for its deep gameplay and unique art style.
