The Outlast series is a famous first-person survival horror game developed by Red Barrels. The first part was released in 2013 and the second part was released in April 2017, both set in the same universe but with different characters and locations.

In Outlast 1, the player takes on the role of Miles Upshur – an investigative journalist who goes to the Mount Massive asylum to investigate suspicious experiments. This hospital is located in a remote mountain range in Colorado, where the Murkoff corporation is conducting illegal experiments on patients.

The second part puts the player in the role of Blake Langermann, another reporter along with his wife Lynn investigating the mysterious murder case of a pregnant woman. The investigation leads them to a fanatical cult at Temple Gate in the Arizona desert, led by Sullivan Knoth with a belief in the impending apocalypse.

Both parts have pure survival gameplay, not allowing players to fight. Instead, you have to use a camera with night vision mode to explore dark areas and gather clues. Managing the camera's battery and stamina while running away are key factors for survival.

The series has many diverse hiding mechanics such as crawling into cabinets, running away under the bed, or hiding in the shadows. Players must skillfully move and utilize the environment to avoid pursuing enemies, from insane patients to fanatical cultists.

Regarding the exploration space, the first part focuses on dark corridors and secret laboratories in the hospital. The second part expands with many outdoor areas such as tall grasslands, abandoned churches, dark mines, and deserted residential areas.

The game features realistic graphics on Unreal Engine 3 along with a vivid sound system. From footsteps, heavy breathing to strange sounds in the dark, all contribute to creating a distinctive horror atmosphere.

The game content deeply explores themes of unethical experiments, extreme religion, hallucinations, and complex psychological issues. Both parts contain many violent scenes and shocking images, not suitable for sensitive players.

The note system in the game allows players to collect documents, audio recordings, and videos to explore the storyline. These clues help players better understand the dark secrets behind each location along with the tragic fate of the characters.

The Outlast series is highly regarded for its ability to create a tense atmosphere and engaging storyline. Although some opinions suggest that the chase sequences can sometimes be repetitive, these are still must-play games for fans of first-person survival horror games.
