Of Ash and Steel is a third-person open-world action RPG developed by Fire & Frost and published by tinyBuild. Inspired by classic RPGs like Gothic and The Witcher, the game blends old-school design philosophy with modern mechanics, delivering a unique adventure set in a low-fantasy world.

The story follows Tristan, a young abandoned cartographer who must rise from nothing to become a respected hero. You will explore Grayshaft, an island once prosperous but now fallen into chaos, where law no longer matters and danger lurks everywhere. While the game does not feature full character creation, it allows customization of Tristan’s appearance and skill build to suit your preferred playstyle.

With over 45 hours of main story content, Of Ash and Steel offers a rich narrative filled with dialogue, deep character development, books, and side quests. You can join one of two major factions—the Knights of the Seven or the Free Hunters—each offering unique storylines, exclusive missions, and special rewards. Your choices directly affect how the world and its inhabitants respond to you.

The combat system requires mastery of key mechanics such as stamina management, timing attacks and blocks, and switching between three combat stances. You don’t start as a legendary warrior—you must train and grow stronger over time. The game features a wide range of weapons, from agile rapiers to heavy armor styles, allowing you to tailor your combat approach or create unique combos.

The expansive open world features diverse biomes, from dense forests to snow-covered mountain peaks, filled with hidden treasures, underwater caves, secret bosses, and engaging side quests. Notably, the game does not rely on quest markers, encouraging players to explore naturally by listening to NPCs, reading notes, and marking important locations themselves

A deep profession system includes fishing, hunting, weapon forging (allowing you to craft unique swords), alchemy, and more. Character progression is divided into three main skill trees: Survival, Crafting, and Warfare. The social system reflects your journey—from an unknown outcast to a respected figure as you grow stronger.
