Dynasty Warriors 9 is a breakthrough in the action game series by introducing a large open world for the first time in the series. The game recreates the entire territory of ancient China on a unified map, allowing players to freely explore and experience.

The combat system is improved with the new State Combo System, including Flow Attacks that change according to the enemy's state, Reactive Attacks that adapt to situations, and Trigger Attacks that can alter the opponent's state. Players can also interact with the surrounding environment such as climbing mountains, swimming across rivers, or using grappling hooks to climb walls.

The storyline is based on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms with 90 characters to choose from, including 83 familiar generals and 7 new characters such as Cao Tu, Man Sung, Tan Hien Anh. Each character has a unique appearance and fighting style.

The tasks in the game are divided into different types such as Key Missions to drive the main storyline and Regular Missions that affect the story development. Players can choose various tactics like direct assault, surprise raid from high points, or night infiltration.

The game graphics realistically recreate diverse lands from snow-covered plains to jungles and deserts, along with a dynamic weather and time system. Historical sites such as Luoyang and Hulao Pass are also detailedly simulated.

The Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires version adds tactical elements with an extensive territory management system. Players not only participate in battles but also have to manage the army, build bases, and establish political alliances to unify the realm.
