Blasphemous is a Metroidvania-style action-adventure game combined with Souls-like elements, offering a dark and challenging nonlinear world exploration experience. Developed by The Game Kitchen from Spain, this title stands out with its beautiful handcrafted pixel art style and profound religious themes.

The story takes place in the land of Cvstodia, a place affected by a strange curse called The Miracle. The player controls The Penitent One, a silent knight – the sole survivor of the Silent Sorrow order. Your mission is to explore this nightmare world, defeat grotesque enemies, and seek the origin of the curse to free the land from its grim fate.

Blasphemous's combat system focuses on the Mea Culpa sword, the only but extremely versatile weapon. The game does not have a stamina system like Dark Souls, instead offering a faster combat pace with brutal combos and impressive execution skills. Players need to learn how to counterattack at the right moment, use magic wisely, and dodge deadly attacks.

The game world is designed in a nonlinear Metroidvania style, allowing free exploration through many interconnected areas. From ancient Spanish villages to ruined cathedrals, from haunted tombs to terrifying libraries – each area has its own unique features with detailed environmental design and a gloomy atmosphere.

The upgrade system in the game allows equipping Relics, Rosary Beads, and Prayers to increase power and unlock new abilities. Unlike traditional Metroidvania, these upgrades mainly serve to enhance stats rather than unlock new areas, creating an interesting difference in gameplay.

The boss fights in Blasphemous are designed to be extremely impressive and challenging. Each boss has a grotesque appearance, combining religious symbols with horror elements, from cracked angels to deformed saints. Players need to learn the movement and attack patterns of each boss in order to win.
The game's handcrafted pixel art graphics are highly praised with each frame meticulously drawn. The art style is inspired by classic Spanish religious paintings, creating images that are both beautiful and eerie. The soundtrack combines Spanish guitar and melancholic cello, perfectly blending with the game's atmosphere.

The game has a playtime of about 15-25 hours for the first time, with many secrets and side quests to explore. Blasphemous also has a free DLC “The Stir of Dawn” that adds new content and areas, along with a more challenging New Game+ mode.
